چکیده

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the grazing behavior mature beef cows natural grassland in silvopastoral systems (SPS) comparison with pasture full sun (FS) during austral summer South America. A total fifty-five Braford crossbred multiparous suckled (352 ± 43 kg) were randomly assigned two treatments, replicates, a complete randomized design: SPS (n=28) and FS (n=27). Global positioning system (GPS) devices placed six selected per treatment (three replicate) track geolocation every five minutes consecutive days. Data analyzed using Java program GRAZEACT determine distance traveled (km), area explored (ha), animal activities (h/d). Type activity defined by based on movement velocity, being categorized as: resting (velocities< 3 m/min), (3< velocities< 25 traveling (velocities >25 m/min). Each these variables automatically calculated for four time periods: Night Pre-Dawn hours (00:00-06:00 h), Daytime (06:00-20:00 Post-Sunset (20:00-24:00 24 h. There effect traveled, area, h period (P ≤ 0.0154). Specifically, had greater = 0.044) < 0.0001) daytime compared FS. In accordance this, same period, lesser spent an extra 1.5 their counterparts. conclusion, changed spatial temporal behavior. provision shade allowed through hours, associated temperatures summer, most-likely improving thermal comfort animals.

Grassland Management with Emphasis on Grazing Behaviour

Investigations into the behavioural responses by ruminants to differences in their grazing environment have led to improved understanding of the grazing process. This has proved useful in developing management strategies which are not only sympathetic to the animals’ natural behaviour, but can improve the level and efficiency of resource use. The components of grazing behaviour considered are a...

Digital cows grazing on digital grounds

Picture a pasture open to all (...) As a rational being, each herdsman seeks to maximize his gain. Explicitly or implicitly, more or less consciously, he asks, "What is the utility to me of adding one more animal to the herd?" This utility has one negative and one positive component. 1) The positive component is a function of the increment of one animal. Since the herdsman receives all the proc...

Predicting Forage Intake by Grazing Beef Cows

The control of feed intake by ruminants is complex, and developing a cohesive theory of intake control in ruminants continues to be a challenge. Because our understanding of factors that regulate intake by cattle is inadequate, predicting feed intake, even under the best of circumstances, is difficult. In grazing cattle, this difficulty is exacerbated by additional influences that can sway basi...

Wild Herbivore Grazing Enhances Insect Diversity over Livestock Grazing in an African Grassland System

Southern Africa's grassland biodiversity is threatened by habitat transformation such as commercial forestry. Ecological networks (ENs) have been instigated to alleviate the pressure of habitat transformation on local biodiversity. ENs are large scale webs of corridors and patches of natural vegetation criss-crossing production landscapes that can simulate conditions in protected areas (PAs). M...

Impact of Grazing on Soil Biota in a Mediterranean Grassland

The effect of cattle grazing on the soil nematode and protozoan communities, and on microbial biomass, was measured in Israel’s northern highlands. Three grazing areas were compared: (1) with 1 1 cow ha 1 y ; (2) 0 55 cow ha 1 y ; and (3) control—no grazing for almost 18 years. Soil samples were collected from the upper 10 cm level of each area (n1⁄4 24), in autumn, before the onset of the rain...
